132. ALTERNATIVE EDUCATION
1.
Purpose
An alternative education program allows the district to remove disruptive students
from the regular school program in order to provide those students with a sound
educational course of study, counseling designed to modify disruptive behavior, and
a return to the regular school curriculum.

The Board adopts this policy to fulfill the requirements for applying for and using
state funds to operate an alternative education program or to contract with a private
alternative education institution for such program.

Definitions

Private alternative education institution - an institution operated by an individual
or a for-profit or not-for-profit entity to provide alternative education programs.

Disruptive student - a student who poses a clear threat to the safety and welfare of
other students or school staff or creates an unsafe school environment, whose
behavior materially interferes with the learning of other students, disrupts the overall
educational process, or exhibits to a marked degree the conditions specified in law.

The Superintendent or designee shall be responsible to develop administrative
regulations to implement this policy, which shall include:
1.
Statement of criteria used to identify students eligible for placement in an
alternative education program.
2.
Process to ensure compliance with required informal hearing procedures when
placing a student in an alternative education program.
3.
Periodic review to determine if students placed in an alternative education
program are ready to return to the regular school curriculum.
a. This review must include an evaluation of each students academic,
behavioral, and attendance progress while in the program. The review
must be documented and kept on file in each individual students record.
The periodic review must take place, at a minimum, at the end of every

semester. However, a student is not eligible to return to the regular school
curriculum until there is a documented progress for 90 school days.
